Classes ‣ Pirate

The Pirate is a class in Rogue Legacy 2.

Overview[]

The Pirate can do everything, and they do it all well. They have very high Strength scaling on their weapon, which has high knockback, good range, and a lot of versatility.

Their talent gives you a flying turret, which you can still attack from for even more damage. Its per-shot Intelligence scaling looks low (40%), but it lasts for 8 seconds and fires over 30 shots in that time span. It's also great for getting out of trouble (or darting back into it).

Pirate's passive also gives them good scaling with Dexterity, and having no Health penalty means they can survive to plunder a little bit longer.

Overall, Pirate is an incredibly versatile class, with both a low skill floor that makes them easy to handle for newcomers, and a high skill ceiling that offers many different ways to play.

Class Passive[]

The Pirate's class passive is Cheap Shot, granting them extra damage for both Weapon Crits and Spell Crits:

Weapon

The Pirate's weapon is the Cannon.

  • Press to swing your Cannon, damaging and inflicting heavy knockback to enemies hit.
  • After swinging, hold to aim and fire your Cannon.

The Cannon's swing has very high knockback.

  • As Lady Quinn mentions, swinging at enemies then following up with a cannon blast is very effective (similar to Tiny Class Icon Dragon Lancer Dragon Lancer's attack pattern).

Cannon shots are versatile and powerful.

  • They inflict ~30% more damage than the swing.
  • Their explosions have a small AoE, which can hit enemies who are otherwise out of reach.
  • You can't move while aiming the cannon on the ground, but you can still dash, and can move freely while aiming mid-air.

Dash Attacks always Skill Crit.

  • This applies to your shots too, if you fire while Dashing.
  • It can be tricky to get the timing because, like Tiny Class Icon Chef Chef, there's a small delay before you swing.

Talent

The Pirate's Talent is Pirate Ship.

  • Activate to create a flying Pirate Ship that blocks Mid-sized Projectiles and rapidly fires cannonballs in a line.
  • Has an 8-hit recharge. Cannon shots recharge it the same as swings.

The ship is stationary by default, but can be moved around.

  • You can still use your weapons and spells while inside the ship.
  • This basically grants you a form of flight that protects you and shoots enemies!
  • Abandoning the ship creates a makeshift projectile shield/turret, which is very helpful against bosses and Commanders.

After 8 seconds, the Pirate Ship will launch itself forward and explode.

  • It explodes on impact with enemies or terrain, and applies Tiny StatusEffect Icon Burn Burn for 3 seconds.
  • Activate your talent before its time is up to explode the Pirate Ship early.

When fighting ground-based bosses who can jump, such as Estuary Lamech or Tubal, keep in mind Pirate Ship counts as a ledge for them to land on. This can lead to unusual and dangerous attack patterns depending on where the ship is placed. This behavior also occurs with Tiny Icon Talent Ivy Canopy Ivy Canopy and Tiny Relic Icon Ivy Seed Ivy Seed.

Class Tips

As mentioned in the Overview, Pirate does everything well, including dealing high damage using his Talent, which is something most fighter-type classes cannot do. Primarily, focus on the Pirate's excellent defensive stats by building for Armor, Vitality and Return Damage. For offense, build for Strength. It's not ideal to use Armor Sets to boost the Pirate Ship's damage, although picking up relics such as Tiny Relic Icon Antikythera Antikythera is still worthwhile.

Listed below are noteworthy interactions with some of Pirate's recommended relics and spells:

  • Tiny Relic Icon Incandescent Telescope Incandescent Telescope - Gives extra damage on enemies at a distance, which applies to both your Cannon shots and the Pirate Ship's shots.
  • Tiny Relic Icon Ivy Roots Ivy Roots - Grants extra damage (12%) while steering the Pirate Ship, boosting its damage as well as your own.
  • Tiny Relic Icon The Heavy Stone Bargain The Heavy Stone Bargain - This affects both the Cannon's swing, and the shot before the cooldown occurs.
  • Tiny Spell Icon Gravity Beam Gravity Beam - The beam continues channeling even while steering the Pirate Ship. Use it to delete Large projectiles coming your way, and deal massive damage as your ship's cannon restores your mana. The same tactic can also be used with Tiny Spell Icon Blaze Bellow Blaze Bellow, albeit just for the damage.

Fabled Class[]

Sick Surfers
  • Press Up/Down on a Pirate during Character Select to change them into Surfers.
  • A Surfer is the same as a Pirate but starts with the Tiny Weapon Icon Surfboard Surfboard.
  • The Surfboard constantly moves you forward while riding it. Deals low damage with normal hits, but extreme damage with Skill Crits. Comes with a surfing tune that plays while riding it. Optimal play involves keeping the tune going!

Lady Quinn Quotes[]

  1. Oooooh! Yarrrrr! I lo-o-ove Pirates. Pirates have so many tricks up their sleeves it’s k-kinda hard to keep track of it all. If you like having a l-l-lot of options, and fighting a little u-underhanded, then a Pirate’s life is for you!
  2. Know what the best thing a-about the Pirate’s Cannon is? It’s got a really strong knockback! So knock foes back, and then follow up with a big ‘ol cannon shot for a 1-2 combo! Yarrrrr!
  3. Y-y-you can’t move while swinging your cannon, but you can still dash! So don’t just stand there, g-get moving! Pirates are squirreley, so get s-squirrlen.
  4. I l-love the Pirate’s little boat! It’s s-so versatile. Try to use it often since it can pack quite a wallop! And don’t forget, you can fly that b-bad girl while you’re helming it! Its range is crazy! Oh and one more neat trick: if you activate the boat again, you can send it flying into your foes extra early!
