The Burning Axe is an enemy encountered initially in Pishon Dry Lake. It attacks by throwing itself at the player, or by spewing flames.
Behaviour[]
The Burning Axe is a flying melee enemy that always try to move towards the player. It attacks by throwing itself at the player while spinning. While it's rather slow during normal movement, it will move faster during its spin attack. As the evolution of the Ember Hatchet, it also has a flamethrower attack.
It has a good knock back resistance and cannot get hurt by spikes & environmental damage (water/clouds) if it flies into them.
Attacks[]
At close range, the Burning Axe will favor its flamethrower attack over its spinning charge. At medium range, it will use both equally.
Spinning Charge[]
After a brief wind up, the Burning Axe charges at the player while spinning, for around 6 seconds.
It will attempt to fly into the player, following them around.
It moves fast but has a low turn speed, making it prone to bump into walls.
Compared to Ember Hatchets, Burning Axes move slightly faster and have a better turn speed, making their movement more accurate.
Flamethrowers[]
After a brief wind up, the Burning Axe spews 4 streams of flame in the 4 cardinal directions for almost 3 seconds.
These flames are similar to those of the Flamethrower Hazards, and can hit the player through walls.
For the duration of the whole attack, the Burning Axe is immobile, but if the is enabled, it can move slowly (usually towards the player) while spewing flames.
Location[]
Ember Hatchets can only appear naturally in Pishon Dry Lake (including within red portals).
Once you reach NG+1, you will unlock the use of burdens:
- each level of the Citadel Agartha to instead spawn as a Burning Axe enabled adds a 10% chance for an Ember Hatchet in
- the same burden also adds a 10% chance for a Burning Axe in the Lake to evolve into its highest variant, the Molten Ono.
Variants[]
Flying Axes are one of the few enemy families to also feature a Void Beast (story based mini-boss) variant.
